The Most Affordable Colleges & Universities for You
Affordability ranks highly amongst the concerns of prospective college students, especially non-traditional students who are balancing work, family, and other financial demands that come with adulthood. The following is a list of the 30 most affordable colleges and universities at which you can earn a bachelor’s degree.
We’ve based this list off the schools’ stated tuition and fees as reported to the US Department of Education via The National Center for Educational Statistics. Each of these colleges has a sticker price for tuition and mandatory fees totalling less than $10,000 per year.
With tuition & fees for less than $10K a year, these are the most affordable colleges in the US…” – @AcadInflux
There are a few things to note, however, when reviewing schools based on cost information alone. Overall, it’s tricky territory and it’s arguably not a good way to find a college if you don’t understand what you’re really looking at. So, be mindful of the following:
Featured Programs
Tuition & Fees
doesn’t cover all fees, all of the time.
Tuition and fees
certainly doesn’t cover room and board or the cost of books or supplies you may need for classes. And often there are other fees that will be on your bill that aren’t considered mandatory.
Think of it like the sticker price of the vehicle. It’s the basically a price the school determines based on its overhead, and where it wants to land in amongst the competition.
To find out more about the actual cost of college, as opposed to the sticker price featured in the brochure, check out our Guide to Paying for College.
Go local!
Your best bet for finding an affordable college is for you to stay in state. In fact, tuition & fees
prices are based on in-state tuitions. A very affordable college in another state may end up rivaling the cost of a more expensive school in-state. For this reason, we provide you with a state-by-state breakdown of affordable colleges so you can find the most affordable option for you in your state.
For more on the benefits of attending college close to home, check out our Focus on In-State Tuition Rates.

Get more personalized information!
If you are shopping based on affordability (which you must be, since you have landed here), there’s another way to look at college cost that most college ranking sites
never bother to tell you about — The average net cost of a school. As mentioned, the tuition & fees
is a sticker price, but what do people really pay? Ultimately, the only way to know what a college or university will cost you is to talk to an admissions representative at each school you’re considering. But that takes time, and frankly, it’s invasive. But you can learn a lot about the affordability of a college for you by looking at the average net price based on your household income. We give you the power to compare school prices based on your household income with our Custom College Ranking tool.
Note, however, that viewing schools based on average net price also has its insufficiencies. The data is an average, so that means a lot of people pay more, and less, that the number given. Anyone would be happy with paying less, but the main thing that would result in you paying more is if you have considerable savings in addition to your household income. That savings you’ve done so well to amass could result in a higher price for you. Reviewing schools by average net price is a helpful and insightful additional way to consider college and university affordability. In some cases, seemingly expensive private colleges become suddenly within budget.
