2025 Ranking Update
Our Influence Ranking Engine™ leverages machine learning to track the real-world influence of colleges and universities over time. Below you’ll see which schools gained or lost ground for the 2025 school year.
There are no changes in our 2025 ranking of the best online master’s of speech pathology degree programs, but a number of the schools in our ranking have made some significant changes in their speech pathology programs.
NYU has expanded the curriculum in its online Master of Science in Communicative Sciences and Disorders program to include specialized electives focusing on emerging areas in speech-language pathology, such as telepractice and multilingual assessment techniques. The program has also increased opportunities for virtual collaboration, enabling students to engage in interdisciplinary projects with peers and faculty across various health disciplines.
Florida State University’s School of Communication Science & Disorders program now offers a hybrid learning environment that combines fully online coursework with hands-on clinical practicum experiences at schools, hospitals, private practices, and other clinical sites within the students’ Florida communities.
Millions of Americans from various age groups with disorders affecting their speech require the help of speech-language pathologists. Speech-language pathologists, sometimes referred to as speech therapists, are medical specialists who detects and resolves issues with swallowing and communicating. They work with children and adults in various settings, including clinics, schools, and hospitals.
Is is worth it to earn an online master’s degree to become a speech-language pathologist (SLP)?
In short, the answer is yes! Speech language pathology is one of the fastest growing fields in the US. These professionals have experienced an 8% salary increase in the last five years as well. And as time passes, demand for professionals in speech pathology continues to rising steadily.
While speech language pathologists are in great demand in the United States, there’s a prevalent shortage of these professionals. It is an excellent time to make the most of the shortage and break into this market.
The standards for speech pathology, however, are high. To begin a career in speech pathology, you need to earn a master’s degree in communication sciences and disorders or speech-language pathology.
Graduate-level degrees are the entry point into the field. A master’s degree in speech language pathology will give you the practical skills and cutting-edge information you need.
Master’s in speech-language pathology programs teach you about much more than speech and communication impairments. These degrees will also help you gain expertise in patient advocacy and research.
This schools listed on the 20 best online speech pathology programs is approved by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, allowing graduates to earn the Certificate of Clinical Competence from the ASHA. Some of these degree programs are also made for licensure in certain states.
While most of the coursework can be completed online, speech pathology students should expect to complete practical training—such as internships and supervised clinics—in either an on-campus setting or in a healthcare setting. Some programs require online students to travel to campus for the practical experience component; other programs allow students to complete their practical experiences in or near their areas.

Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology
The University of Wisconsin at Madison, accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), is one of the best for speech-language pathologists. The university offers a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology, integrating a rigorous curriculum that prepares graduates for licensure practice.
Students can complete a master’s with a thesis or a master’s without a thesis. Either way, students must complete 40 credit hours in four semesters. On the other hand, applicants without prior education in communication sciences and disorders or speech pathology will have an additional semester to complete the Post-Bac Program.
If you pursue a PhD after your master’s degree, choosing the path with a thesis option is best. You can also pursue the Normal Aspects of Speech, Language, and Hearing track. This track, however, is a non-clinical track, which means that you’ll have more focus on becoming an excellent educator.
If you want to practice in the field and obtain a teacher certification, pursue the Speech-Language Pathology track.
Only 20-30% of the speech-language pathology program curriculum can be completed online. Students will spend the rest of their time completing supervised diagnostic and therapy experiences with people from various demographics in various on- and off-campus clinical settings.

Master of Arts Degree in Speech-Language Pathology
The University of Cincinnati is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) to grant traditional and online degree programs to qualified students. One of the university’s online degree programs is the Master of Arts Degree in Speech-Language Pathology. This part-time online degree program requires students to live within 4 hours of driving distance from the campus.
While some of the courses can be completed through online lectures, students must still comply with the practical experience component of the program, which includes internships and practicum.
Despite the online MA in speech pathology program being only part-time, it would be best not to try to maintain a full-time job. It would not be feasible to complete the program’s required number of clinical hours while working full-time. However, if you’re currently employed as an speech-language pathologist assistant, it may be possible to enter the program under the supervision of your employer.
Students will start their clinical placements in nearby sites beginning in the fall semester of the first year of the program, working up to one full day per week until the fall semester of the third year. Students must then be accessible at least three days each week during the final three semesters of the program. It is also important to note that some clinical placements may require four to five days.
UC also offers a specialized full-time MA program for Orthodox Jewish learners, the Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology Testing and Training International (TTI) program.
What we love about University of Cincinnati:
UC offers an accredited online MA in Speech-Language Pathology with internships. However, limited clinical hours pose employment challenges.
University of Cincinnati is ideal for students who:
UC is perfect for students looking for recognized Speech-Language Pathology programs, online flexibility, and practical experience.
University of Cincinnati might not be the best fit for students who:
Online students may not prefer UC programs with internships/practicums.

Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology
The University of South Carolina, accredited by the SACSCOC, offers a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology distance learning program tailored to the needs of working adult students or students with other obligations.
Like other MS degrees in SLP, this hybrid degree program accepts students without prior knowledge of the field as long as they agree to complete prerequisite courses on campus. Students without a bachelor’s degree may need to spend an additional year to earn the degree.
Students can enroll in asynchronous courses, giving them more flexibility in juggling school, work, and personal life obligations. However, students will still be required to attend synchronous or live classes to get to know their peers and faculty. Students can take quizzes and exams online and some proctored exams at regional testing centers close to their residences.
Students will focus on clinical rotations after completing prerequisites and required courses. They will have a five-week rotation, a six- to eight-week rotation, and an eight- to ten-week rotation in various clinical settings in South Carolina.

Master of Science in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Texas is the #1 state for employment for speech language pathologists, putting Baylor University in one of the top spots for this profession. Recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges & Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), Baylor provides online speech-language pathology students with the highest quality of education.
Professionals who feel compelled to help children and adults with communication and hearing disorders can enroll in Baylor’s Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders program. Students will be immersed in a curriculum grounded in research, clinical experiences, practical competencies, and mentorship opportunities. The online program’s curriculum is the same as the on-campus speech language pathology program.
The program’s main goal is to produce effective speech-language pathologists capable of helping people who encounter communication challenges daily.
In addition to its comprehensive online coursework, students must complete 400 field hours, or nine credit hours, to graduate. Each practicum requires 16–20 hours of weekly commitment; the internship requires 35–40 hours. This time commitment suggests that students should not enroll or should shift jobs if they work in a non-SLP field. Those working in an speech pathology field can use their hours as part of the internship requirement.
Students will partake in client sessions and offer diagnoses, including treatment plans, lesson plans, and evaluations.
This program best suits students who want to integrate Christianity into their studies.

Online Education and Professional Requirements for Speech-Language Pathologists
Although states have various standards for speech pathology regarding postgraduate professional experience requirements, among other things, speech language pathologists in the United States are required to obtain either a Master’s in Communication Sciences & Disorders (CSD) or a speech pathology degree.
Many prospective speech language pathologists in a master’s program have a CSD undergraduate degree. However, some graduate programs in online speech pathology programs and CSD accept undergrads from other fields as long as they’re willing to study for an additional semester to complete prerequisite courses.
According to ASHA’s guide to educational routes, students could be required to do a particular CSD curriculum, depending on the program.
Furthermore, the Bureau of Labor Statistics states that speech-language pathologist students must complete a master’s program, gain supervised clinical experience, and pass a licensing exam to get licensed.
How To Make Your Application for Online Speech Pathology Programs Stand Out
Applying to a speech pathology grad school is not something to take lightly. Admissions can be very competitive and demanding.
While it’s true that an applicant’s GPA and GRE scores are taken into account, these are just two of the many requirements that admissions committees review. The admissions committee for online speech pathology programs that offer graduate degrees look for two qualities in applicants: the capacity to do well in the program and the dedication to the subject. Admissions committees seek proof that applicants know the field’s requirements and have decided that it is what they want to do.
To make your application stand out, you should also work on your:
- Intent: You must clearly state your motivations for wanting a career in speech pathology. Gather evidence that demonstrates your interest in a career in speech-language pathology. You can also talk about your passion for helping people in general.
- Community involvement: Talk about your practical speech pathology experiences related to what you discovered about a particular group. This will be very valuable if you apply with an undergraduate degree outside the field.
- Worthwhile relevant experiences: Instead of recounting a succession of uninteresting conversations, try to describe one profound experience that taught you something about SLPs and the clinical process.
- Recommendation letters: Most schools search for letters of recommendation from a professor or course teacher familiar with the applicant. You want more than just a note stating that you attended class and received a particular grade. Someone familiar with you beyond just your schoolwork should write a recommendation letter.
Speech Pathologist: Career Outlook and Career Paths
Professionals who help patients overcome speech and language disorders are very in-demand. From 2021 to 2031, there is a predicted 21% growth in the number of professionals working in speech pathology. The growth of SLP careers outpaces the national job growth average of 5.3% for all occupations.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the projected growth is driven by many elderly persons from the baby boomer generation needing more attention, increased knowledge and awareness of speech issues in children, and general medical advancements.
The median annual pay of speech-language pathologists is $79,060. However, speech therapists’ potential earnings are directly influenced by their workplace.
When considering your career prospects within the field of speech pathology, you should consider the work environment, the geographic location you are considering, and the specialization area that interests you most. All of these factors will determine the salary that you will earn as a speech-language pathologist.
The following table shows the median annual salary of SLPs by the work environment.
Work Environment | Median Annual Salary |
Nursing and residential care facilities | $99,340 |
Hospitals; state, local, and private | 95,620 |
Offices of physical, occupational & speech therapists & audiologists | 93,510 |
Educational services; state, local, and private | 75,270 |

There are numerous specialties available for speech therapists. These specialties concentrate on various facets of speech pathology and may require specialized education and training. Regardless of the area of specialty in speech therapy, evidence-based practice will be used in many SLP positions. Specialties include:
Swallowing Disorder
Dysphagia, the medical term for swallowing disorders, affects people of all ages. Swallowing difficulties can endanger a person’s health, safety, and general well-being, lessening their quality of life.
Speech-language pathologists with expertise in swallowing disorders aim to maintain or improve a patient’s health, functional abilities, and quality of life while addressing their abnormal eating and drinking patterns.
Speech Pathology Assistant
Graduates who want to work in the SLP field but are yet to earn their master’s degree can consider positions as speech pathology assistants. SLPAs, however, are not allowed to practice independently. Instead, they can only perform tasks like administrative work under the direction of a licensed speech-language pathologist.
Speech Disorder
Speech disorder jobs involve assisting people with challenges associated with speech, such as creating speech sounds, fluency, or voice resonance. SLPs in this job specialization often meet with patients who stammer.
Cognitive Communication Disorder
SLPs in this specialization work with patients who are dealing with cognitive-communication difficulties. Their patients may have dementia, have had a stroke, or a traumatic brain injury.
Deafness and Hearing Disability
SLPs in this field work with people who are deaf or have hearing loss. These SLPs often collaborate with audiologists and work with patients and their relatives. SLPs in these positions may focus on either children or adults.
Language Disorder
This SLP job specialization involves helping people with spoken or written language difficulties. SLPs in these roles are often visited by patients who are experiencing problems with expressive language, receptive language, or language use in a socially and functionally meaningful way. SLPs in this field may further specialize in language disorders related to syntax, phonology, morphology, and pragmatics.
Social Communication Disorder
SLPs in a social communication disorder specialization help patients having trouble with verbal and non-verbal social communication. SLPs specializing in communicative disorders aim to assist patients in comprehending the social aspects of communication, such as adapting speech to the listener and context, understanding conversational and storytelling customs, and learning proper speech conduct in various social contexts. They frequently assist those who are on the autism spectrum as well as those who have suffered trauma like a brain injury.
Bilingual Speech Pathology
A bilingual speech-language pathologist is a certified SLP who speaks a second language with near-native proficiency. These professionals possess additional language acquisition abilities concerning speech challenges. They must be skilled at code-switching or fluidly switching between languages in the middle of a statement. This often calls for a bilingual and multicultural certificate.
Is applying to an speech language pathology program worth it?
It is worth pursuing a graduate degree in speech-language pathology thanks to the above national average expected job growth. SLPs are also in demand worldwide in various settings, including schools, residential, and nursing facilities.
By choosing to work as a speech-language pathologist, you will have the wonderful opportunity to assist people of all ages in managing or resolving communication or swallowing difficulties so they may lead the lives they deserve. This makes it a very rewarding career. Speech pathologists are not limited to office work, and their workdays are frequently flexible.
