Admission Requirements for Community colleges
Most community colleges have at least some minimum requirements for admission to the school. Typical minimum requirements include a high school diploma or GED.
The college will ask for a completed application, high school transcripts, and an application fee. Most of the time, the application fee is fairly modest, but many community colleges are willing to grant students a fee waiver based on need and income.
Some community colleges may require prospective students to take prerequisite courses or a skills assessment if they fail to meet the minimum requirements prior to gaining admission to the school.
Some schools may also require an interview or a written essay.
Back to TopWhat should you look for in a community college?
A community college can be a great way to earn an associate degree or gain the skills and education needed for numerous trades. Community colleges are typically far less expensive than a traditional four-year college, and students can earn a degree in half the time, but what should you look for to find an excellent school?
Accreditation
But obviously, you want to ensure that you attend one of the best community colleges to protect your investment. Accreditation is one of the best ways to do that. Community colleges that have been accredited are also eligible to award financial aid through the federal government. Regional accreditors include:
Geographical Location
Many of the community colleges in our ranking may not be physically close to your state of residence. However, many community colleges offer online degree programs.
An online degree program means that even if you don’t live in close proximity to the school, you can still take advantage of their educational opportunities. Online learning is also a real boon for busy working professionals who need to maintain their current job while they pursue a degree.
Credit Transfers
Many students begin their college education at community colleges and then transfer to a bachelor’s degree program after they earn an associate degree. Community colleges may participate in credit transfer agreements with in-state public colleges and universities.
Transfer agreements mean that the credits that you earned at the community college are transferred to a bachelor’s degree completion program, enabling you to finish a bachelor’s degree in two years.
Student Submitted Questions about the Best Community Colleges
Can you get a bachelor’s degree at a community college?
Most community colleges offer 2-year associate degrees and certificates, but there are occasionally some community colleges that offer bachelor’s degrees.
Do community colleges have college dorms?
Most community colleges do not offer housing, but some may work with nearby housing partners for their students.
What if I had a very low GPA in high school?
Most community colleges accept students even if they didn’t have stellar GPA’s in high school. However, the school may require students to take some prerequisite courses to boost the student’s knowledge and skills before taking higher-level courses in their degree program.
